Murphy Bible

The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments,
Philadelphia, Jesper Harding & Son, 1859. Harding's
Imperial Quarto Edition. One of the earliest large, elaborate
family Bibles that became common at the end of the century.
The gilding on the edges is still vibrant, and has some of the

earliest examples of color printing. Hills #1699.

This Bible was rebound in a flexible, vinyl binding sometime
during the 20th century. This did its job in keeping the pages
inside undamaged. The pages are heavily foxed because of
the quality of the paper used.

There is a large amount of recent ephemera from Oklahoma
and Florida, including a jewelry warranty, life insurance denial, and
a tabloid account of the lost papers of Jesus. Not all of these
are digitized below. This Bible was apparently in the possession of
Laura Douglas of Waldo Florida as recently as 1999.

Simeon, Martha and family are shown with a large group of
children (~45) in the 1860 census. He is the superintendent of the
Bethesda Orphan School in White Bluff, Chatham County,
Georgia (near Savannah). He was born in New Jersey and Martha
was born in South Carolina according to the census record.

Simeon might have been the director there during the trying
War days. The school had an interesting history during the war,
and I would like to know about his participation there.
